Director of Secondary Education
DIRECTOR OF SECONDARY EDUCATION
DEFINITION
Under direction of the Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services, facilitates the ongoing development and alignment of the district’s secondary programs; provides guidance and support to secondary school principals in meeting district goals and learning targets for secondary students.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Serves as a leader and resource in all matters relating to secondary teaching, learning, assessment, and reform.
- Coordinates the secondary instructional program in a manner consistent with district goals and Local Control Accountability Plan.
- Analyzes and interprets data to improve student achievement.
- Provides district liaison services with the County Office of Education and other agencies on matters pertaining to secondary education.
- Serves as line support for secondary schools, fielding parent, principal and staff questions or uniform complaints.
- Supervises and evaluates assigned personnel, including TOSAs, classified staff, management staff and alternative education staff including CVA and CSA.
- Plans and implements professional development and support to principals in the implementation of adopted programs and priorities.
- Collaborates with other directors and assistant superintendents to provide alignment and continuity across the district.
- Implements intervention programs to support the needs of struggling learners.
- Provides assistance with secondary school staffing.
- Prepares all required reports and maintains all appropriate records.
- Assists Principals in preparing for WASC and other accreditation visits.
- Supports federal and state programs and grants.
- Coordinates the reporting of alternative education student progress to the various stakeholder groups.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge of:
Best practices and trends related to secondary education; budget management and fiscal fitness; student data analysis and review; principles and practices of effective school leadership; applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies, and procedures
Ability to:
Provide leadership and direction to building principals and assistant principals; motivate and influence others toward positive action; evaluate staff performance using meaningful data and success indicators; review legislation related to existing guidelines and recommend appropriate action; interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; make decisions that are sound and well-communicated; meet schedules and timelines; prepare and deliver presentations and reports to a variety of audiences; work as a contributing and collaborative member of a team
Experience/Education:
Masters degree, five or more year of successful experience as a secondary principal, demonstrated ability to work with a wide variety of stakeholder groups, including teachers, parents, community members, and employee organizations
Credential Requirements:
California Administrative Service Credential

Salary/Calendar:
220 days per year at Range 21 of the District’s Certificated Management Salary Schedule.
