Summer 2025 - Echoes Magazine Internship

Position: Fall 2025 Internship – America 250-Ohio State Commission – Educational Engagement

Type: Paid

Schedule: Part-time, 10-15 hours a week

Location: Huntington Center, 41 S. High St., Suite 250 Columbus, OH

Reports to: America 250-Ohio State Commission Staff Liaison

About Ohio History Connection:

The Ohio History Connection, formerly the Ohio Historical Society, is a statewide history organization with the mission to spark discovery of Ohio's stories. Chartered in 1885, the OHC carries out history services for Ohio and its citizens focused on preserving and sharing the state's history. This includes housing the state historic preservation office, the official state archives, local history office and managing more than 50 sites and museums across Ohio.

Summary:

The Educational Engagement Intern will support the America 250-Ohio State Commission's outreach to educational institutions across Ohio in preparation for the nation's Semiquincentennial in 2026. Interns will work directly with Ohio's colleges, universities, trade schools, and alternative schools to encourage participation, build relationships, and identify meaningful ways for these institutions to engage in America 250 initiatives. Two interns will be hired for this role.

Essential Functions:

  • Serve as a liaison between the America 250-Ohio State Commission and Ohio's educational institutions.
  • Conduct outreach to colleges, universities, trade schools, alternative schools, and other educational organizations.
  • Coordinate, schedule, and attend virtual and/or in-person meetings with school representatives.
  • Provide information about the Commission's programs, answer questions, and help identify programmatic fit.
  • Track outreach and engagement efforts and recommend next steps.
  • Assist with developing strategies to engage a wide range of educational institutions.
  • Collaborate with Commission staff and fellow interns to ensure consistent communication and outreach.

Required Education, Skills, Experience:

  • Must be enrolled in an academic program OR a recent graduate from an academic program (within one year).
  • Preferred Majors: Education, History, Public Affairs, Communications, Community Engagement, or related fields.
  • Experience with: Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, email communication, virtual meeting platforms (e.g., Zoom, Teams).

Required Competencies:

  • Works well independently and in collaboration with a team.
  • Demonstrates strong written and verbal communication skills, including professional email correspondence and meeting participation.
  • Comfortable engaging with educational professionals and community partners.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Other Requirements:

  • Must complete a background check and internship onboarding paperwork.
  • Must create an account, log internship hours, and sign up for internship shifts via Track It Forward.
  • Must present at the internship summit.
  • Must attend professional development opportunities and meetings as requested.

Education and Experience Outcomes:

  • Gain experience in professional outreach, partnership-building, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Develop skills in coordinating and facilitating meetings.
  • Build familiarity with large-scale public history and civic initiatives.
  • Expand understanding of Ohio's educational ecosystem.


 

Required Competencies:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age to volunteer without a guardian
  • Must complete a background check, waiver of liability/photo release form and emergency contact form
  • Must log internship hours via Track it Forward, the volunteer management system
  • Must attend professional development and volunteer meetings
  • Reliable and punctual

Education and Experience Outcomes:

  • Will learn to contribute within a team environment
  • Will learn about aspects of state government and advocacy efforts
  • Will gain an understanding of the inner workings of a non-profit work environment
  • Will learn about the history of Ohio
