ACCOUNTING STUDENT ASSISTANT – ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES DIVISION / ACCOUNTING SERVICES SECTION / FISCAL SYSTEMS UNIT

Job Description and Duties

The reporting location for this position is in the Natural Resources Agency building, which boasts an array of amenities including a free fitness center and is in downtown Sacramento with easy access to buses and light rail. Hybrid and flexible work schedules are available.

The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is looking for an enthusiastic student with an accounting concentration and a passion for learning, developing solutions, collaborating with others, and improving processes to join our small dedicated Fiscal Systems team. The Fiscal Systems Unit is responsible for maintaining portions of the Department’s accounting/budgeting/procurement system, the Financial Information System for California (FI$Cal) as well as many of the department's internal financial systems used by State Park professionals for processing financial transactions and managing fiscal activities.

In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will assist in performing the less complex accounting work necessary to provide daily, monthly, and yearly fiscal information to the department by gathering and reconciling data, monitoring deadlines, compiling information for financial reports, updating Microsoft Access databases and Excel spreadsheets; and downloading queries and reports from FI$Cal. They will also assist with the monthly labor distribution process including maintenance of required labor tables and databases, analysis and audit of timesheets for cost allocation purposes, analysis and correction of errors, reconciliation of labor distribution subsystem transactions, and updating written procedures.

This position is designated as telework eligible-remote centered.

Employment in all cases for the Student Assistant and Graduate Student Assistant is either as occasional employment or on a part-time basis during the school year. Individuals in these classifications work on an actual hours worked basis to a maximum of 1500 hours. This will allow departments to work employees in these classifications up to 1500 hours in a 12 consecutive month period regardless of the number of days they have worked. The appointment shall not exceed nine months in a 12-month period. Individuals in these classifications receive no permanent status in state service.

Working Conditions

The incumbent works on the 12th floor of a high-rise office building in downtown Sacramento. The job requires

extensive use of a personal computer, attending virtual and live meetings, and interacting with staff statewide to complete assignments.
