Description

Merchant McIntyre & Associates is a midsize federal grants and government relations firm headquartered in Washington, D.C., that helps nonprofit clients from the higher education, healthcare, and local government sectors reach their federal funding and legislative advocacy goals. 

 

Merchant McIntyre is seeking an experienced Manager of Finance and Accounting. Supporting MM’s leadership, this role will report to our Director of Human Resources and will serve as an advisor on all financial matters, overseeing and executing MM’s financial and accounting operations. 

 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversee all day-to-day accounting activities, including but not limited to accounts payable, accounts receivable, collections, payroll, credit card transactions, monthly reconciliation, and QuickBooks management. 
  • Partner with HR to execute payroll and ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local tax regulations, and oversee the preparation and filing of tax returns. 
  • Partner with the Client Service team to support clients' onboarding and communication with clients on invoicing, contracts, or identifying payment matters. 
  • Assist in-house counsel in designing and implementing internal controls and provide support in client contract development and renewal processes. 
  • Manage relationship with our third-party strategic financial advisor to develop and execute strategies aligned with the firm’s growth goals and long-term objectives; oversee the completion of audits or reviews as needed. 
  • Contribute to financial reports, including monthly and quarterly statements, forecasts, and other analyses, including the annual budgeting process. 
  • Evaluate current financial systems and accounting workflows. Implement standard operating procedures and best practices, including leveraging technology to improve efficiency and accuracy. 
  • Support the ongoing development of the firm’s capacity-building services sister agency. 
  • Support office operations as needed and directed by MM leadership. 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field required; Master’s degree preferred. 
  • Strong proficiency in GAAP-compliant practices; CPA license preferred. 
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in finance and accounting, with at least one year in a managerial position.  
  • Advanced knowledge of QuickBooks, Excel, and payroll management (e.g. Paylocity) required. Benefit experience preferred (e.g. Workers’ Compensation, disability, fringe benefits). Previous experience with expense management tools (e.g. Expensify) and/or CRM software (e.g. Salesforce) is a plus.  
  • Demonstrated ability to operate independently and with discretion as a team of one, while providing leadership and strategic insights to firm leadership. 
  • Exceptional organizational, analytical, and communication skills, with a proven ability to manage multiple responsibilities. 

Compensation & Benefits

  • Full-time, salaried position based in Washington, D.C., with opportunity for travel.

  • Compensation range: $90,000-$115,000, commensurate with experience 

This is a hybrid role in Washington, DC, and requires in-office attendance Tuesday-Thursday. Remote candidates will not be considered.
