Director of Apprenticeship and Customized Training

Under the direction of the Dean of Applied Technologies, the Director of Apprenticeship and Customized Training is responsible for the oversight and direction of industry and community college pre-apprenticeship, apprenticeship, and customized industry training programs. The Director will work with the Customized Training Coordinator to develop programs to meet local workforce needs. The position collaborates with NC Community College System Office staff, high school representatives, economic development agencies, and program deans and directors to identify career pathways for apprenticeship opportunities.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
 

  • Manages the College’s apprenticeship and customized training programs.
  • Registers and maintains applications and other program data in the ApprenticeshipNC database.
  • Mentors and assists apprentices throughout the pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship cycle.
  • Coordinates and assists with college recruitment events including industry tours related to apprenticeship.
  • Maintains, monitors and reports course and program records for programs in the pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs.
  • Collaborates with the local economic development boards, chambers of commerce, Workforce Development Board, and secondary education partners to recruit for the pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs.
  • Supervises and evaluates the Customized Industry Training Coordinator.
  • Coordinates admissions processes and procedures for all apprenticeship students with appropriate college staff and faculty.
  • Coordinates marketing and recruiting efforts at the secondary level with the Director of Secondary Partnerships and Career Coaches.
  • Develops, monitors and plans effective utilization of budget resources in collaboration with the Dean of Applied Technologies.
  • Collaborates on the development and evaluation of Work-Based Learning (WBL), apprenticeships, internships, job shadowing, on-the-job training, etc.
  • Works with deans, directors, program coordinators, and career coaches to identify appropriate training and career pathways for students.
  • Supports outreach initiatives to create awareness and recruit students into apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs.
  • Ensures compliance with the standards of the NC Community College System for Registered Apprenticeship and Pre-Apprenticeship.
  • Participates on committees, task forces, and professional associations/organizations at the local, regional, and state level.
  • Represents the college with local workforce development partners, business organizations, and economic development groups.
  • Coordinates the instructor onboarding process for the delivery of apprenticeship training.

Education and Experience: 
 

Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities. 

A typical way to obtain these would be:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • At least three years of full-time experience in a manufacturing setting.
  • Preferred experience in identifying problems, creating solutions and managing projects involving recruitment, retention and management of students in apprenticeships and internships.
  • Demonstrated leadership and administrative ability.
