Environmental Science Officer (72D) - U.S. Army Active Duty

Job Description:

As a Environment Science Officer (72D ), you will lead efforts to protect Soldier health through the identification, evaluation, and mitigation of environmental and occupational health risks. You'll conduct field surveys, assess hazards (air, water, soil, food, materials), guide commanders on preventive measures, and support national readiness through public health interventions and scientific analysis.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct environmental health and industrial hygiene assessments
  • Evaluate water, air, food, soil, and hazardous materials for safety and compliance
  • Recommend health and safety controls to military commander
  • Supervise scientific research for public health and environmental safety
  • Support military readiness, humanitarian missions, and emergency response operations
  • Assess weapons systems, clothing, and materials for environmental impact
  • Contribute to policy development to protect Soldier health

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • U.S. Citizen
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. institution in:
    • Environmental Science
    • Environmental Health
    • Industrial Hygiene
    • Epidemiology
    • Toxicology
    • Safety Management
  • Must meet Army medical and moral eligibility requirements
  • Competitive undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Must have 45 credit hours of combined science coursework /(inc. 5 lab-based)
  • Must include 15 credit hours of public health-related coursework
  • Foreign degrees must be evaluated by a NACES or AACRAO-approved agency.

 

Preferred Qualifications (for higher ranking/constructive credit):

  • Master's degree in Environmental Health, Public Health (CEPH-accredited), or Environmental Science
    • Course Requirements:
      • 45 credits of advanced science/engineering coursework with 5 lab courses related to associated advanced science courses                                                        OR
      • 30 credits of advanced science/engineering coursework with 5 lab courses related to associated advanced science courses AND 15 credits of public health-related coursework. 

 

  • Professional certifications such as:
    • Registered Sanitarian (RS/REHS)
    • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
    • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
    • Certified in Public Health (CPH)
    • Diplomat of the American Academy of Sanitarians (DAAS)
    • Board Certified Environmental Engineer (BCEE)
