Position Description: School Counselor (Whole School PreK-12)

Job Location: Sejong Academy Charter School, 2410 Stillwater Rd E, Maplewood, MN 55119

Direct Supervisor: Dean of Students

Background: Sejong Academy is a PreK-12th grade Korean immersion charter school located in Saint Paul/Maplewood, MN with approximately 335 students. Our vision is that our students will become scholars of Korean and English, as well as socially responsible global citizens. We are an authorized International Baccalaureate World School with the Middle Years Program, and we are a candidate school for the IB Career-related Program.

Employees are required to be in attendance and prepared to begin work at the school on the specified days and hours. The position hours during the school year are 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Monday to Friday. This is a year-round position that has full-time hours during the school year and part-time hours over the summer.

Essential Functions: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist all students on caseload with academic, personal, social emotional, and career counseling as needed
  • Monitor student’s progress towards graduation including credit requirements
  • Provide guidance to students for post-secondary planning
  • Build long-term relationships with students and their families
  • Attend IEP meetings for students on caseload
  • Give feedback and recommend appropriate action and solutions to individual student’s academic and educational needs and abilities
  • Provide individual student planning and responsive services to support students and their families regarding academic, social emotional, or behavior concerns
  • Collaborate with the Special Education Team, the MTSS team, and the Student Success Coach to help identify students who may need targeted or intensive services
  • Provide group counseling as a Tier 2 intervention
  • Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and supporting agencies concerning the needs and abilities of students.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean of Students
  • Lead Social Emotional Learning programming
  • Implement and collaborate with staff for a school-wide social emotional program under the supervision of the dean of students
  • Provide guidance to teachers to implement social emotional learning curriculum such as Second Step, Life Skills, and Emily’s Hope
  • Train and advise classroom teachers and school staff on social emotional learning

Preferred candidates will have:

  • CACREP Accreditation
  • Knowledge of appropriate counseling theories and practices
  • Demonstrated success working with diverse populations
  • Awareness of post-secondary college and career opportunities
  • Knowledge and experience working with Synergy or other student information systems

Master’s Degree in School Counseling is required. Minimum starting salary depends on educational experience.
