Intern Emergency Management

Position Function

 

Work under the supervision of the Emergency Management Administrator to gain educational and practical experience in emergency management. Tasks will include conducting preparedness activities, training, attending meetings, and participating in real-world or simulated emergencies.

 

Tasks/Duties

 

  • Assist in the creation, maintenance and implementation of emergency management plans.
  • Staff the City Emergency Operations Center (EOC) during real-world emergency activations.
  • Experience and support Incident Command (IC) for large-scale and planned events.
  • Provide hands-on logistical and resource support to various emergency response teams during EOC activations and times of normalcy.
  • Develop and facilitate emergency management drills, exercises and preparedness programs.
  • Assist in the maintenance of the City’s incident management and monitoring tools.
  • Provide recommendations towards the City’s overall readiness and culture of preparedness.
  • Research potential programs, policies and tools to augment the City’s emergency management capabilities.
  • Prepare and maintain records for various emergency management functions and projects.
  • Complete trainings and perform other duties as assigned by the Emergency Management Administrator or Administrative Director.

 

Qualifications

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED is required for this role.
  • Current enrollment in a graduate or undergraduate degree program with an interest and aptitude to work in public safety.
  • Declared major/minor within Emergency Management, Homeland Security, Public Administration, Crisis Management or closely related field.
  • Must be able to work various hours to include evenings, weekends, and overnight operations.
  • Valid driver license. Must obtain Florida driver license within thirty (30) days of employment.


 

PREFERABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of emergency management concepts and terminology.

 

Supplemental Information

 

Driving history for the past three (3) years must reflect no violations of a driving related felony offense, or driving under the influence (DUI) which includes both drugs and alcohol, reckless driving, or hit and run involving an occupied vehicle or attended property, or an accumulation of traffic violations, plus three (3) points for each attendance at driving school (regardless of whether points were assessed against the license) where the penalty points do not exceed twelve (12).

 

Applicants will be required to complete a Disclosure & Authorization Regarding Background Investigation, a Confidentiality Agreement and the CJIS (Criminal Justice Information Services) Security Clearance process to include approval for controlled access to protected information and a national fingerprint-based record check.
