Public Relations Intern

POSITION SUMMARY:  

The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) seeks a part-time Public Relations Intern to work closely with the Manager of Public Relations and Communications. The internship will run from September 2025 – April 2026. The intern must be available 24 hours a week in addition to being available to work 40 hours a week during the 2026 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show, February 27 – March 8.  

Day-to-day schedules are flexible through the duration of the internship to accommodate for school schedules. This position will receive a total stipend of $3,000, if a single candidate is selected, payable in 3 payments, on the condition that the student must receive college credit for the internship. 

It is desired for this internship to be completed by one candidate; however, the internship may be split into two sessions for two different candidates. The first session will run September – December 2025, and the second will run January – April 2026. If two candidates are selected, the stipend would be applied as one payment of $1500 for each semester, on the condition that the students must be receiving college credit for the internship. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

Supports the implementation of public relations and communications strategies by: 

  • Drafting and developing press materials such as press releases, media alerts, pitches, and other related documents, including communications materials for the PHS Philadelphia Flower Show.
  • Supporting coordination and staffing of press events such as press conferences or on-site media calls for various PHS programs.
  • Tracking media coverage and archiving press clips.
  • Utilizing PR software to research media contacts, archive press clippings, distribute press materials, and create campaign reports.
  • Assisting in booking PHS spokespeople for relevant media opportunities.
  • Uploading and formatting communications materials to the website.
  • Support social media influencer campaign strategies for PHS events and programs.
  • Communicating consistently with media personnel to maintain positive relationship for PHS and organization-wide events.
  • Other administrative and organizational tasks as needed.

Experience and Skills Required  

  • Ideal candidate will possess a passion for communications, public relations, and marketing
  • Ideal candidate will have a positive attitude and strong desire to learn
  • Ideal candidate should possess strong writing skills and a general understanding of how to draft mass media materials
  • Strong research skills and ability to research effectively and independently
  • Proven track record of success in any aspect of communications and marketing
  • Ability to prioritize effectively and work independently
  • Ability to propose and implement fresh ideas that support strategy
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of social media platforms a plus
  • Knowledge of public relations software such as Meltwater, Cision, Critical Mention, or Muck Rack a plus
  • Prior event planning or communications experience a plus
  • Customer service background or experience a plus
