Server Administrator and Network Engineer

Summary/Objective: This position combines the responsibilities of an Server Administrator and a Network Engineer. The successful candidate will be responsible for the maintenance, security, and optimization of our company's server infrastructure and network systems. This role requires a strong understanding of both server administration and network engineering principles, as well as excellent problem-solving and communication skills. 

 

Essential Functions: Specific duties include, but are not limited, to the following:

Server Administration:

  • Install, configure, and maintain Windows and Linux servers, both physical and virtual.
  • Manage user accounts, permissions, and access control.
  • Perform regular server maintenance, including patching, backups, and performance tuning.
  • Troubleshoot server issues and provide timely resolution.
  • Monitor server performance and capacity planning.
  • Ensure server security and compliance with industry best practices.

 

Network Engineering:

  • Design, implement, and maintain network infrastructure, including routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless access points.
  • Monitor network performance and troubleshoot network issues.
  • Configure and manage network security, including firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and VPNs.
  • Maintain network documentation and diagrams.
  • Implement and manage network monitoring tools.
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest networking technologies and trends.

 

Additional Skills:

  • Experience with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
  • Scripting experience (e.g., PowerShell, Bash).
  • Experience with automation tools (e.g., Ansible, Puppet).
  • Knowledge of ITIL best practices.

 

Supervisory Responsibility: This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities. 

Work Environment: This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, printers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets. 

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Due to the nature of the work, exposure to electrical systems will occur. Standing, sitting, walking, bending, and being able to lift 50 pounds safely is required. And the ability to work on a ladder at a height of 10 feet is required.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are primarily Monday through Friday, 8:00a to 4:30p. However, evening and weekend hours are required as job duties demand. 

Travel: Little to no travel is expected for this position. 

Required Education and Experience:  

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Proven experience in both server administration and network engineering.
  • 3+ years of prior IT experience.
  • Strong understanding of Windows and Linux operating systems.
  • Experience with network security tools and techniques.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V).
  • Combination of experience and education considered in lieu of requirements.
