Job Summary:

 

This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Microbiologist 1 position for the Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory within the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine at Oregon State University (OSU ). This is a limited duration appointment expected to last approximately 2 years from the appointment begin date.

Responsibilities for this position include performance and interpretation of routine diagnostic tests as well as providing additional support activities for the Molecular Diagnostics laboratory.

Key Responsibilities

 

55% Performs standardized procedures for molecular identification of viruses, bacteria and parasites.

 

15% Processes and labels samples.

 

10% Enters and finalizes results into VDL LIMS computer system.

 

10% Assists with training and day-to-day guidance and prioritization of workflow for student laboratory assistants.

 

5% With guidance from Supervisor and/or Lead Technologist, assists with updating SOPs and other official documents.

 

5% Monitors equipment for proper functionality and maintains laboratory QC and QA records as necessary for the lab to maintain AAVLD accreditation and good laboratory practices.

 

What You Will Need

 

• A Bachelor’s degree with advanced courses in Bacteriology, Chemistry, and/or other biological fields which shows knowledge of microbiology theory, principles, and practices and laboratory procedures, equipment, and instruments; OR

• An equivalent combination of training and experience.

• An appropriate level of understanding of microbiologic and molecular testing procedures, laboratory terminology, equipment, and materials.

• A good working knowledge of standardized molecular testing methods using aseptic techniques.

• Must be able to use micropipettors accurately, as well as specialty equipment designed for use in a molecular lab, centrifuges, balances, and miscellaneous laboratory equipment.

• Demonstrated ability to contribute to an inclusive, respectful, and welcoming workplace environment for individuals with a range of different backgrounds, identities, perspectives, and/or life experiences.

 

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

 

What We Would Like You to Have


 

• Minimum of 6 months previous work experience at the time of hire performing nucleic acid extractions and various PCR amplification methods for identification of viruses, bacteria or parasites.

• Successful completion of AAVLD / NAHLN PCR proficiency testing for key analytes (Influenza A Virus, African Swine Fever, Classical Swine Fever, Foot and Mouth Disease/Senecavirus A).

 

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

 

Rabies vaccination will be required. Standard work schedule will be M-F, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Work may require occasional overtime hours on evenings and/or weekends. Employee will be exposed to animal and human pathogens. Employee may be exposed to noxious odors and hazardous chemicals. Work may require sitting for extended periods of time while working in a biological safety cabinet. Must have good manual dexterity and the ability to perform very detailed tasks.
