Outreach - Recycling Intern

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Riverside County Department of Waste Resources is offering an exciting opportunity for a student or emerging professional to serve as an Outreach - Recycling Intern. This position will provide hands-on experience in community outreach, public engagement, and environmental programs within local government. The intern will support solid waste and recycling initiatives and gain valuable skills in communication, marketing, customer service, and program development. Applicants who are creative, self-motivated, interested in public-facing work, and who have a background or interest in sustainability and environmental programs, are encouraged to apply!

The internship is based in the Riverside area, with a flexible schedule of approximately 20 hours per week to accommodate academic commitments. The intern may occasionally assist during weekend or evening events, depending on availability. The position is expected to last up to two years.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Under close supervision, the intern's duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in the creation and implementation of programs and services
  • Support social media content creation and strategy
  • Community outreach and engagement techniques
  • Customer service and communication
  • Learn basics of public relations and marketing in a government setting
  • Gain knowledge of solid waste and recycling regulations
  • Obtain an overview of local government operations and environmental/waste legislation

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average: 2.5 GPA required. Proof of most current unofficial/official transcript with cumulative GPA must be provided at time of application.

Education: Applicants must be currently enrolled/attending school at an accredited college or university, in a certificate, bachelor's or master's degree program, or preparing to transfer into a bachelor's degree program during the entire duration of the internship. Recent college graduates are also eligible to intern for up to one year from their graduation date. Graduation date must not exceed a twelve month maximum during the duration of the internship. 

Areas of Study: Sustainability and Environmental Sciences; Public or Business Administration, Human Resources, Organizational Studies or similar; Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or similar; Arts or Humanities

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Interest in sustainability or environmental/waste reduction programs, community education, and public service


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with social media platforms and video editing abilities (Instagram, Facebook, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)
  • Experience using Canva for design and outreach materials
  • Bilingual
  • Coursework or experience related to sustainability, environmental sciences, communications, marketing, or public administration
