The Marketing and Communications team (Creative, Database Marketing, Marketing and Public Relations) at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), promotes the MFA’s collection, exhibitions and programs through outreach to local, national and international press, print and digital advertising, management of social media channels with over 1.3 million followers, and email marketing. 

The team is seeking an enthusiastic, detail-oriented intern with strong communications skills and an interest in pursuing a career in marketing and communications. They will also have opportunities to grow their professional networks through interactions with colleagues and interns from departments across the Museum. Reporting to the Marketing and Communications Officer in a fast-paced environment, the intern will become integrated into the daily operations of the Marketing and Communications team, gaining valuable practical skills and workplace experience.

The ideal candidate must commit to working onsite up to 16 hours a week, including a mutually predetermined combination of 9am-5pm Monday through Friday, and up to 7 external events with differing time commitments), from September 12, 2024 through December 20, 2025, as well as attendance at the Museum Pathways & Practices professional development sessions from 12:30-2:30pm on the following Fridays: Sept 19, Sept 26, Oct 3, Oct 10, Oct 17, Oct 24, Oct 31, Nov 7, Nov 14, Nov 21, and Dec 5. Up to 4 hours per week may be completed remotely with prior approval of the mentor. 

The intern will be paid at a rate of $16.80 per hour and will receive a $90 per month transportation subsidy. (*The subsidy is subject to taxes.)

Essential Responsibilities

  • Assist in pre-planning of exhibition marketing by researching data, background and images to help build marketing plans/briefs
  • Learn project management tools to initiate promotional emails and marketing campaigns 
  • Assist with on-site and events such as press previews, marketing events, and photo/video shoots
  • Serve as off-site point of contact and facilitator for 5-9 community events where the MFA will require a brand presence. Will require work outside of the 9am-5pm museum schedule.
  • Organize inventory of merch and prepare packages for events, partners, and journalists. 
  • Pull advertising samples for proofing and archiving 
  • Assist in preparing wrap-up reports for internal and external stakeholders
  • Brainstorm new marketing and tourism partnerships
  • Attend events and conferences with staff members to promote tourism initiatives and upcoming exhibitions
  • Assist with promotion of MFA events through event listings and track performance 
  • Develop remarketing promotional plan targeting audiences reached during offsite events
  • Assist new promotions interns in the spring semester with off-site events if extended 
  • *Prepare and offer a 3–5-minute final synoptic presentation of the internship as part of the Museum Pathways & Practices professional development course 

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in an undergraduate degree program concurrent with the internship period. Preference will be given to rising juniors and seniors (class of 2026 or 2027)
  • Strong interest in art and the museum industry 
  • Excellent writing, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of social media platforms including Instagram and TikTok and interest in staying on top of trending topics and platform updates
  • Proven ability to work efficiently as part of a team and independently
  • Keen attention to detail and ability to multitask 
  • Confidence to take initiative and pitch new ideas and content
  • Ability to commit to work onsite 16 hours per week (within Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm parameters), from Sept 12 through Dec 20, 2025, including attendance at the Museum Pathways & Practices professional development course from 12:30-2:30pm on the following Fridays: Sept 19, Sept 26, Oct 3, Oct 10, Oct 17, Oct 24, Oct 31, Nov 7, Nov 14, Nov 21, and Dec 5.  
  • Ability to attend orientation on Fri, Sept 12, 2025, 10am to 3:30pm.
