Social Media Intern

Work-Study Social Media Intern (Hybrid, 15 hours a week) 

Location: Hybrid (University of Washington, Seattle-based)Hours: 15 hours/week 
Compensation: Work-study eligible position, $20.76

About WA MESA 

The Washington Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) program is an educational pathway program administered by the University of Washington and established by the Washington State legislature. Washington MESA provides enrichment and access opportunities to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs for grades 6 –12, community college, and university students across the state with the goal of increasing representation in STEM fields. 

Position Overview 

WA MESA is seeking a creative and proactive Social Media Intern to support our social media and digital communications efforts. You’ll work alongside our team to help share compelling student stories, plan campaigns, and grow engagement across platforms like Instagram, LinkedIn,  and Facebook. This is a great opportunity for students interested in social media, marketing, communications, or nonprofit work—especially those passionate about equity in STEM. 

This position is through the Fall Quarter with the potential of extension through the Winter to UW students. 

 

Key Responsibilities 

Content Creation: Assist in the development and creation of social media content, including graphics, videos, and written posts that align with MESA’s mission and brand. You’ll help create engaging Reels and posts that highlight student success stories, the MESA Community, and opportunities.  

Social Media Management and Engagement: Help manage social media accounts across various platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. This includes scheduling and posting content to maintain a consistent presence and refining practices to consistently engage audiences. Foster relationships and build community collaborations with our audience and encourage participation in MESA’s initiatives. Increase engagement across Instagram and Facebook. 

Campaign Strategy: Assist in crafting and providing support for social media campaigns related to MESA’s goals, priorities, and events. Assist in the planning, execution, and promotion of these campaigns. 

Analytics & Reporting: Track the performance of posts, campaigns, and engagement metrics. Help compile reports to assess the success of social media strategies and recommend adjustments as needed. Stay up to date with current trends in social media engagement and nonprofit communications. Apply this knowledge to enhance MESA’s digital presence and increase engagement. 

Collaboration & Coordination: Work with team members across MESA sites to ensure content aligns with local and statewide initiatives. Contribute creative ideas for future social media campaigns and initiatives to ensure consistent messaging. 

 

Qualifications  

Required Qualifications: 

  • Familiarity with platforms like Instagram, Instagram Reels, LinkedIn and Facebook
  • Strong writing and storytelling skills
  • Experience using basic visual tools to create engaging graphics (e.g., Canva)
  • Basic video/photo editing skills to create short-form video
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Background or coursework in communications, journalism, marketing, or design
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Premiere Pro, etc.)
  • Interest in STEM, education equity, or community outreach
