Join a professional team that plays a crucial role in North Carolina’s financial health and gain hands-on experience across multiple divisions.
About the Office of the State Treasurer
Under the leadership of State Treasurer Bradford B. Briner, the department:
- Preserves and protects retirement and healthcare pension funds.
- Manages over $200 billion in assets.
- Oversees investment strategies to maintain our AAA bond rating at nctreasurer.gov.
- Administers benefits for 1 million public employees and manages NC Unclaimed Property.
Meet the Divisions
You’ll have the opportunity to work in one or more of these key areas:
- Financial Operations
- Supports day-to-day accounting, reporting, and budgeting.
- Information Technology
- Develops systems to manage financial data and streamline operations.
- Investment Management
- Manages the Short-Term Investment Fund (STIF), the Pension Fund Investment Program, and the Ancillary Governmental Participant Investment Program (AGPIP). Includes roles in fixed income, public equity, private equity, real estate, and cash management.
- Retirement Systems
- Administers retirement plans, including pension, 401(k), and 457 plans.
- State & Local Government Assistance
- Advises on municipal finance, debt issuance, and best fiscal practices.
- State Health Plan
- Manages healthcare benefit programs for public employees.
- Unclaimed Property
- Retrieves and returns abandoned property to rightful owners.
Internship Details
- Status: Paid
- Duration: September - December
- Compensation: Hourly pay
- Education Level: College undergraduates and graduate students
- Dress Code: Business or business casual

Who Should Apply?
- NC residents enrolled in an accredited institution (in-state or equivalent out-of-state).
- Minimum 3.0 GPA preferred
- At least 18 years old by the program's start.
- Committed to full-time participation throughout.
- Eligible to work in the U.S. and eligible for federal and state-level background checks.

- Final placement
- Internship roles are confirmed by late August or early September.
- Capstone experience
- Intern orientation, followed by a productive summer, and opportunities to attend tours and events, including possible receptions sponsored by the NC Internship Council
