Compliance Specialist

Looking for a diligent and communicative team player with customer service experience to join the Industrial Accidents Division as a Compliance Specialist. This role offers a great work-life balance, with eventual hybrid work opportunities!


 

This position requires you to work 8 AM - 5 PM Monday through Friday at our downtown Salt Lake City office. Following the initial 3-month training period, you will be eligible to apply for a hybrid schedule of no less than 2 days on-site and 3 days of telework per week*.

(*Note: Beginning July 1, 2025, all State employees will be required to work a minimum of 2 days on site. Additional days on site will be required as needed for coverage, training, and/or meetings.)

 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Compliance Specialist is crucial for the workers' compensation coverage waiver (WCCW) program, operating in a high-volume environment. This role requires strong multitasking and organizational skills, serving as the primary public contact via phone, email, and in-person interactions. The specialist ensures waiver program integrity and compliance while providing excellent customer service.

Daily responsibilities include:

  • Application Review & Processing: Thoroughly reviewing and processing waiver and corporate exclusion applications for completeness, accuracy, and gathering necessary supporting documents.
  • Eligibility Determination: Confirming applicant eligibility based on program guidelines and legal statutes.
  • Public Assistance & Education: Answering public questions and guiding applicants through the waiver process regarding their rights and responsibilities according to the Workers’ Compensation Act.
  • Data Management & Record Keeping: Accurately entering and maintaining data in designated systems and tracking application statuses.
  • Compliance & Enforcement: Conducting compliance audits, initiating denials/revocations for non-compliance, managing appeals, and referring uninsured employers for investigation.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong verbal communication skills to professionally and clearly respond to public inquiries via phone, in-person, or virtual platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce clear, concise, and professional written documents, including tailored emails and letters that effectively convey information.

 

PREFERRED

  • Fluency in both English and Spanish (speaking, reading, and writing).
  • Demonstrate ability to learn, retain, and apply laws, rules, policies, and/or procedures.
  • Experience in explaining complex laws, rules, policies, and/or procedures to the public.
  • Familiarity with Utah Workers' Compensation.
  • Proficiency in case management practices, including meticulous note-taking.
  • Experience utilizing databases or proprietary software.
  • Competency with Google Docs and Google Sheets.

    2. Employees hired on or after 7/1/2011 and who have never been in the URS retirement system have two options for retirement in the Tier II System.
      • Tier 2 Hybrid Retirement System. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary between both plans (pension and 401(k))
      • Tier 2 Defined Contribution Plan. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary to a 401(k) plan only.
    3. Employer contributions to your 401(k) are vested after four years.
  • Paid Time Off:
    1. Annual leave and sick leave are accrued at 4 hours per pay period each (4 hours annual, 4 hours sick).
    2. Annual leave amounts increase with years of service.
    3. We have 12 paid holidays.

  • The ability to ensure compliance with statutes, rules, regulations, etc.
  • The ability to evaluate information against a set of standards.
  • The ability to communicate information and ideas clearly and concisely, with English fluency.
  • The ability to compose and produce reports, documents, and related materials.
  • The ability to follow processes to completion timely and accurately.
  • Possess excellent business writing skills.
  • The ability to establish, organize, and/or maintain files.
