Principal

Job Title: Principal

Reports To: Executive Director

Supervises: Teachers

Supports: Elementary school at Brooklyn Park All Departments

Status: Full-time, Non-Exempt, 40 hrs wk, 8:00-4:00, M-F, 12 months

Position Summary:

Direct and manage instructional programs. Provide leadership to ensure high standards of instructional service. Assist the Executive Director in overall administration and leadership of the school. Works closely with staff and parents in an effort to create a successful experience for students at Spero. The primary contact for instructional leadership and any questions/concerns.In the absence of the Executive Director, is appointed Acting School Executive Director.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Education or a closely related field
  • A valid Principal’s license or in the state of Minnesotaor enrollment in an accredited, state approved administrative licensure program. Other administrative license will be considered.
  • Three years K-8 teaching experience
  • Special Education License preferred.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Management

  • Focused on the overall delivery of education to students. While a professional in this position will work closely with teachers and other staff members in developing plans and curriculum, there is typically not any staff supervision required.
  • Performs a variety of administrative duties to assist the Executive Director in managing the school; assumes the duties of the Executive Director in the absence and as assigned.
  • Provides instructional leadership to the school. Participates in development and evaluation of educational programs.
  • Encourage and support development of innovative instructional programs, helping teachers pilot such efforts when appropriate.
  • Participate in school leadership meetings and training to improve administrative skills; maintains current knowledge of the district’s adopted curriculum.
  • Monitor instructional and managerial processes to ensure that program activities are related to program outcomes and use findings to take corrective actions.
  • Regularly consult the campus-level committee about planning, operation, supervision, and evaluation of campus education program. Include students and community representatives when appropriate

School/Organizational Climate

  • Promote a positive, caring climate for learning.
  • Communicate effectively with students and staff.
  • Provide direction to a variety of faculty, staff, and student programs and services; participates in formal and informal classroom visitations and observations; provides recommendations and suggestions for improvement as appropriate
  • Provide instructional resources and materials to support teaching staff in accomplishing instructional goals.
  • Provide for two-way communication with the leadership team, staff, students, parents, and community.
  • Communicate and promote expectations for high-level performance to staff.
  • Recognize excellence and achievement.
  • Ensure the effective and quick resolution of conflicts.

Administration and Fiscal/Facilities Management

  • Works with the Executive Director to establish a safe and secure learning environment for students.
  • Comply with district policies and state and federal laws and regulations affecting the schools.
  • Develop campus budgets based on documented program needs, estimated enrollment, personnel, and other fiscal needs. Keep programs within budget limits. Maintain fiscal control. Accurately report fiscal information.

Student Management

  • Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of intervention programs that address the needs of at-risk students.
  • Develops and administers disciplinary procedures in accordance with district policies and state laws that results in positive student behavior and enhances the school climate; receives referrals and confers with students, parents, teachers, community agencies, and law enforcement; responds to and resolves parent, student, and staff concerns and complaints; serves on discipline or expulsion panels as assigned.
  • Monitors and organizes attendance functions; prepares letters, calls parents, and attends meetings as needed, regarding absent or tardy students; provides leadership for attendance improvement efforts
  • Participates as needed in Individual Educational Plan meetings and Team Meetings.
  • Conduct conferences about student and school issues with parents, students, and teachers.
  • Regularly consult the campus-level committee about planning, operation, supervision, and evaluation of campus education program. Include students and community representatives when appropriate
