They possess excellent communication and research skills and demonstrate a keen interest in visual arts, cultural programming, and public events. Experience with graphic design tools, social media management, or event planning is a plus. The ideal candidate is dependable, proactive, and excited to support local artists and cultural projects while gaining real-world experience in a municipal setting.

They are a team player who enjoys creative problem-solving and brings a positive attitude to their work, whether supporting community outreach efforts, helping with event logistics, or organizing digital assets for public art programs.

The selection process will include a minimum qualifications assessment and may also include an application and supplemental questionnaire review, followed by department selection interviews.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

Research and Information Gathering 

Research local, national , and international artists to identify potential opportunities 

Assist in compiling artist bios, exhibition histories, or exhibition concepts.

Community Engagement 

Assist in the planning and coordination of workshops, events, and public meetings focused on Arts and Culture. 

Assist with the design and creation of department marketing materials , including social media advertisements, posters, banners, brochures, and press releases. 

Work closely with the Communications and Intergovernmental Relations department on community outreach efforts.

Assist in writing and scheduling content for Arts and Culture social media platforms and City Newsletter. 

Administrative Support 

Assist with preparing documents such as reports, presentations, and summaries for departmental use and public meeting updates.

Under the advisement of the Arts and Culture Manager, work directly with artists providing support in the development and completion of department projects.

Assist with maintaining and organizing digital and/or physical files, including artwork submissions, artist portfolios, event schedules, and press materials.

Assist in coordination of artwork selection panels. 

Schedule meetings and appointments for the team and/or artists, as needed.

 

Special Projects 

Art Mapping Project: Support the Art Mapping Project through data collection and entry, photography, report creation, and recommendations. 

Assist with quarterly art exhibitions at the Finley Community Center

Support 2025 Live at Juilliard Concert Series by providing weekend tabling at the events as needed and vendor coordination. 

 

Required Qualifications

 

General Qualifications: To qualify for any Student Intern position, individuals must be enrolled in a full-time or part-time academic or vocational program or curriculum that is directly related to the work the Intern would be performing for the City. Student Interns are classified as temporary employees and work variable hours per week on a schedule that accommodates their academic coursework or schedule and the operational needs of the department. 

Knowledge of: The use of computers and technology, customer service relations, and local government functions. 

Interest in: Graphic design, art, communications, marketing, photography, or public administration. 

Interns must have the ability to: complete basic arithmetic calculations; efficiently and accurately use computer software programs; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and, if required, have the ability to work outside periodically.  

License: For assignments that require travel to locations throughout the City, individuals must be physically capable of operating a motor vehicle safely and possess a valid, Class C California driver's license OR be able to demonstrate the ability to travel on scheduled and unscheduled visits to various locations in the City which may or may not be reachable by public transportation.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Working Conditions: Work will be performed primarily in an indoor setting, with some projects taking place outdoors, interacting with art, events, businesses, and the community. May sit and stand for extended periods as well as lifting of materials up to 25 pounds with the ability to sit or stand as needed and communicate face-to-face, on the telephone, and via email.
