Project Chemist

Project Chemist 

American Colors, Inc. is an employee-owned, customer-focused manufacturer of liquid colorants and other mixtures supplied to diverse applications including paint, coatings, adhesives, plastics, landscape, and cosmetics. Chemists at ACI formulate, test, and develop new products to fulfil the needs of our customers.  This position involves hands-on formulation and operation of lab-scale equipment, as well as lending technical support to our customers and manufacturing operations and working in cross-functional teams from other areas of our business.

Summary of Position:

  • Experimental design and laboratory trials to formulate pigment dispersions and other mixtures
  • Safely perform laboratory bench work utilizing equipment and processes including, but not limited to:
    • High-speed mixing via overhead mixers
    • Particle size reduction via media mills or roll mills
    • Particle size analysis
    • FTIR spectroscopy
    • Color spectroscopy  
    • Physical testing suite including viscometers, rheometer, non-volatile analyzer, pH meter, moisture titrator, accelerated weathering testers
  • Develop or utilize prototype finished goods (ex. paint, caulk, color cosmetics) to test and validate pigment dispersions
  • Provide technical support to our sales team and customers
  • Collaborate with peers as well as sales and marketing to develop and introduce new product lines
  • Provide technical support to manufacturing through new formula scale-up
  • Maintain accurate documentation of laboratory activities including but not limited to formulations, test results, status updates, and project reports.

 

Qualifications:

  • BS/BA in an appropriate field of science (Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Cosmetic Science, Pharmaceutical Science).
  • Experience helpful but not required.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate as part of a team
  • Adaptable to changing priorities and able to manage more than one project at a time.
  • Desire to continually learn and share new information with peers
  • Availability and willingness to travel to customers, vendors, or other American Colors facilities.
  • Communication, organization, and time-management skills.
