Missing Indigenous Persons Task Force Coordinator

The Montana Department of Justice is seeking a dedicated and highly organized Missing Indigenous Persons Task Force (MMIPTF) Coordinator. This position plays a vital role in supporting the MMIPTF, a multidisciplinary team appointed by the Attorney General to address the crisis of missing Indigenous people in Montana.

The MMIPTF operates under the Montana Department of Justice and focuses on identifying systemic causes of missing persons cases, improving cross-jurisdictional coordination, and supporting community-based responses. As the Coordinator, you will facilitate the Task Force’s operations and ensure the successful implementation of key grant programs.

Located in Helena, Montana. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate meetings, maintain records, and support daily functions of the MMIP Task Force.
  • Administer two state-level grant programs:
    • Looping in Native Communities (LINC)
    • Missing Persons Response Team Training
  • Conduct outreach and provide education to tribal communities and agencies.
  • Collect, analyze, and present data on missing Indigenous persons in Montana.
  • Draft formal reports and policy recommendations for the Montana Legislature, elected officials, and state departments.
  • Promote best practices and strategies to overcome jurisdictional barriers in law enforcement and social services.
  • Support efforts to reduce the number of missing American Indian and Alaska Native individuals.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Sociology, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Proven experience supporting boards, councils, or formal workgroups.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and coordinate meetings and events.
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams, including tribal, rural, urban, governmental, and non-governmental organizations.
  • Knowledge of grant management, program development, and the effects of crime on individuals, families, and communities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong organizational and administrative skills.
  • Proficient in data collection, management, and analysis.
  • Ability to draft evidence-based policy, procedures, and legislative reports.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in a diverse and cross-jurisdictional environment.
  • Commitment to serving tribal communities with cultural sensitivity and respect.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional education or experience in social services, Indigenous studies, or public policy.
  • Familiarity with tribal governance structures and community-based outreach.
