
EPC Academic Coach/Intern

The Educational Partnership Center coordinates the student academic preparation efforts of the University of California, Santa Cruz with the goal of increasing access and opportunity to post-secondary education for students across the Monterey Bay and Silicon Valley/San Jose Regions. Our focus is helping underserved students in our region reach and succeed in college.
Skills Knowledge and Abilities Required:
• Must be a full-time, undergraduate student at an institution of higher education.
• Provide documentation of exemplary completion of math courses through Algebra II and above.
• Able to communicate effectively and respectfully with people from different racial, ethnic,
and cultural backgrounds and lifestyles, demonstrating sensitivity to their needs.
• Utilize experience and discretion in handling confidential and sensitive information.
• Work independently with minimal supervision; establish and maintain effective work relationships within the EPC and school site; work independently or within a team.
• Able to work a minimum of 15 hours per week, M-F and some evenings and weekends.
• Prepare and present written and oral information clearly and effectively.
• Possess working knowledge of computer operating systems (Microsoft Word, Excel, File Maker Pro), peripherals, software, e-mail and internet access.
• Able to sit at a desk and use a computer for long periods of time.
• Maintain good academic standing at enrolled institution of higher education; must enroll in 12 units per quarter/semester.

• Must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5
• Must have California driver’s license.
• Must possess reliable mode of transportation to school-site and/or program office.
Skills Knowledge and Abilities Preferred:
• Have one semester of college experience.
• STEM major or background.
• Knowledge of academic and college preparation programs such as GEAR UP, EAOP, MESA, AVID or Upward Bound.
• Prior tutoring experience in math, English language arts, science and history at secondary schools.

% of Time Duties
40% Core Function: In-class and/or after school tutoring
• Provide in-class and after school tutoring to program participants in math, English
language arts, science and history.
• Facilitate small group tutoring sessions or work with specific students one-on-one, in class and/or after school.
• Facilitate the in-class learning process by explaining concepts and encouraging open
communication with students.
• Reinforce lessons presented by teachers.
• Work cooperatively with teachers, volunteers, parents, and other school staff.
• Assist the progression of the class period by actively looking for students that need
support by asking open ended questions.
• In absence of the teacher, assist substitute with regular class routine and projects.
• Promote any after school program services.
• Assist classroom teacher with instruction when appropriate.
40% Core Function: Academic Advising
• Assist site supervisor in providing academic and career advising to program participants
in small groups or one-on-one, including the completion of financial aid forms and college
applications.
• Manage a caseload of students for which incumbent will analyze grades, offer guidance and suggestions on academic deficiencies, and track student progress via appropriate forms.
• Update and maintain student/caseload files accordingly.
• Assist site supervisor in providing program participants with academic enrichment
workshops such as study skills, time management, leadership, and post-secondary
opportunities.
• Monitor progress towards students educational goals and discuss grades and other
performance indicators as well as poor attendance.
15% Core Function: Communication and Facilitation
• Facilitate workshops to program participants on topics related to academic success such
as time management and study skills, college admission requirements, college application
completion and leadership.
• Communicate with teachers regarding student performance in class and/or after school, as well as any changes to agreed upon schedule.
• Assume responsibility for learning program projects, goals, rules, and guidelines.
• Meet with Site Supervisor to discuss, plan, and coordinate, advising and other
responsibilities or projects.
• Keep updated, organized, and accurate records of student information in accordance with program regulations, including grades, data entry, and academic progress of student participants.
• Facilitate connections to resources and programs that help support student personal and
academic development.
• Provide general support to program teachers to facilitate program activities.
• Assist in the implementation of field trips and special events.
• Regularly communicate with site supervisor to discuss, plan and report on assigned
projects.
• Complete and submit all necessary program forms such as contact logs.
• Assist in the recruitment of program participants and families if needed.
• Communicate any schedule changes due to participation in trainings and meetings.
5% Core Function: Administrative Support
• Create fliers, event announcements. reminders, and other forms of correspondence to
students.
• Make copies or prepare outreach material for distribution to program participants.
• Make phone calls to program participants.
• Attend mandatory trainings and/or in-service workshops.
• Support career staff at major events as needed.
