About this position:
The Relay Engineering Supervisor is responsible for supervising all relay projects in Montana and South Dakota, and leads an engineering and drafting design team. The Supervisor will work closely with Substation Construction, Project Management, Planning and Engineering, Communications, Lands and Permitting, and Supervisors in Substation Operations. The Supervisor assists in developing the annual budget and work plan for Montana and South Dakota. The Supervisor will ensure relay projects are completed on schedule and within budget. The Supervisor will work to maintain a safe working environment for all employees within their reporting responsibility.

About this job:
- Duties include engineering design reviews, budgeting, planning, forecasting, and supervising capital work for Montana and South Dakota substations
- Supervisor will guide the relay engineering departments standards implementation
- Ensure that the relay engineering department stays current with the industries rapidly advancing technologies
- Develop, design, estimate, and execute capital projects and annual work plan
- Supervise an engineering staff
- Develop and maintain formal work plans
- Responsible to ensure that all work is done in compliance with all federal, state, and local rules and regulations as well as Policies, Procedures and Standards published by NorthWestern Energy
- Responsible to make sure that all work is done in compliance with the NorthWestern Energy Safety Manual
- Work closely with the Project Management Department, the Planning Department, and the GIA Department in developing drawings and estimates for GIA/TSR projects
- Drive the department's efforts in developing and maintaining engineering standards
- Able to interact effectively with company employees, contractors, and other internal departments
- Job time spent in an office environment and in the field with managing projects, occasional lifting up to 35 pounds
- Travel is required up to 60% of the work time
- Participate in an On- Call rotation, after-hours duties, periodically, for one week at a time; this includes response to emergency situations and calling personnel out for after-hours activities
- Provide backup for Supervisors and Engineers during periods of leave

Am I right for this job? Here's the success profile:
- Must have a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a similar field of study
- A Professional Engineer's License is preferred, or the ability to obtain one
- Excellent computer skills and proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
- Working knowledge of Substation and Relay databases
- Good understanding of electric power systems and electric circuit analysis techniques
- Good understanding of microprocessor based equipment and logic design, preferred
- Good working knowledge of NESC, NERC, FERC and WECC guidelines
- Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record
- Demonstrate and maintain a good safety record
- Must have proven skills as a project scheduler and be proficient with project scheduling software
- Must possess strong interpersonal communication skills
- Applicants for this position must have a background in, or demonstrate practical knowledge of, all phases of substation and relay construction, engineering, and operations, including financial operations and budget management
- Must have a general knowledge of the electric transmission and distribution systems; knowledge of utility regulation and government regulation (FERC, DOT, etc.)
- Working knowledge of utility industry safety and environmental standards and their application.
- Demonstrated knowledge of related Collective Bargaining Agreements
- Applicants must have the ability to supervise and direct the activities of several functions and direct reports, coordinate diverse activities, delegate responsibilities efficiently, and promote and maintain a positive work environment
- Effective administrative and leadership skills are required as well as excellent oral and written communication skills
- A proven track record as a change agent with skills and experience for innovation and implementation of new programs and procedures is essential
