
Reference Librarian Team Lead
DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
Oversees the day-to-day operations of the Information Services (Reference) Department, coordinates staff efforts, and supports the library’s strategic goals through innovative programming, thoughtful collection development, and meaningful community engagement.
The successful candidate will provide outstanding research and reader’s advisory assistance, manage adult collections, lead department staff, and play a key role in outreach, budgeting, and program planning.
Team Lead Responsibilities:
Facilitate weekly department meetings to guide discussion on programs, staff projects, and priorities. Lead Reference Department staff and manage team scheduling to ensure adequate coverage and collaboration. Create monthly department reports, including service statistics. Review and approve program forms and purchase orders, relay proposals to the Assistant Director for coordination with the leadership team. Oversee the Reference Department budget, including print and digital collections, databases, and supply purchases. Lead current and future department committees. Oversee local history and archival initiatives, including the Illinois Room, digitization priorities (in partnership with IDA), and newspaper archive expansion (post-2020 content). Coordinate and track community engagement efforts and civic group involvement, maintaining a shared contact database and outreach schedule. May assist with library website content or maintenance (training available). Assign and monitor responsibilities related to the seed library and other department initiatives. Receive and manage patron materials requests.
Information Services Librarian Responsibilities:
Provide reference and reader’s advisory services in person, by phone, and virtually. Select, purchase, and manage assigned adult collections including fiction, graphic novels, Quincy Author fiction, senior, and special needs materials. Analyze usage and community trends to inform purchasing decisions using review sources, publisher tools, and circulation data. Manage requests for patron materials and oversee periodicals and newspaper collections. Participate in adult programming, contributing to planning, delivery, and promotion of events. Support and promote information and digital literacy through programming, outreach, and one-on-one assistance. Serve at public service desks, including occasional shifts in the Children’s Department. Become a certified notary public (training and certification provided by the Library).
QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS or equivalent) required. Minimum two years of professional library experience preferred. Supervisory or leadership experience is strongly preferred. Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Proficient with library technology, databases, Microsoft Office Suite, and Google Suite. Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and manage multiple priorities and deadlines. Experience in outreach, community engagement, and program planning are desirable. Must be self-motivated, adaptable, and comfortable working with all ages and abilities. Valid driver’s license and clean driving record preferred. Ability to lift and move library materials and work evenings and weekends as required.
