JOB TITLE: Immigrant Legal Services Intern
REPORTS TO: Citizen and Volunteer Coordinator
WORK LOCATION: DuPage/Aurora
POSITION SUMMARY
Provide administrative support to our Citizenship and Naturalization caseload for the Immigration Legal Services (ILS) department. You’ll have opportunities to gain knowledge and experience in Immigration law, particularly as it relates to Naturalization, while learning about issues affecting the immigrant community and supporting World Relief’s mission.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Attend monthly Citizenship Clinics (sometimes on Saturdays) – whether occurring in the office or at an off-site location
- Prepare USCIS forms for Naturalization under the Supervision of WR
- Prepare USCIS Fee Waivers for Naturalization under the Supervision of WR
- Conduct Community Outreach at select immigrant-focused community events
- Participate in a mandatory 2-week intensive training
- Attend relevant Immigration legal trainings/meetings
- Follow up with clients regarding missing documentation needed for their application
- Interact with a variety of clients from diverse countries (40-50% of the clients served in this department are former refugees re-settled by World Relief or are non-Latino)
- Gain experience in cross-cultural communication as well as working in a legal office atmosphere
- Assist with prompt filing and data entry of all correspondence from Immigration
- Communicate any pertinent information to the appropriate client and the Citizenship Associate
- Assist the Citizenship Associate in maintaining adequate office supplies
- Assist the Citizenship Associate with clinic preparation and follow-up
- Assist in case management by maintaining an established filing system
- Assist with data entry using Law Logix (LLX) database
- Answer and screen incoming phone calls for the ILS department and direct accordingly
- Complete weekly summary report, required readings, intern cohort reflections, and an advocacy action project
QUALIFICATIONS
- Commitment to the mission, vision, and values of World Relief
- Spoken and written fluency in Spanish is preferred
- Organizational skills, detail-oriented and self-motivation
- Ability to multitask different tasks/projects
- Ability to work independently on tasks and in group settings
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Computer literacy, including experience with Microsoft Excel and Word
- Previous cross-cultural experience preferred
- A desire to serve the immigrant and refugee community
DETAILS
- Approximately 15-20 hours/week depending on availability
- Flexible schedule
- Starting date negotiable
- University credit is available with prior approval
