JCT’s mission is to provide the city’s residents with reliable, well-researched content on all aspects of Jersey City’s politics, government, education, development, business, and culture.
JCT attracts over 60,000 unique users each month, sends out a daily email to over 8,000 readers, and has over 20,000 social media followers across multiple platforms.
Job Overview
JCT is seeking a reporter to take responsibility for covering education in New Jersey’s second-largest school district. Secondarily, the reporter will be called upon to cover non-education-related stories as time permits. Applicants should have strong newsgathering and writing skills. The reporter will be responsible for pitching and writing stories, as well as follow-ups and long-form, in-depth pieces.
Salary: $65,000 - $70,000 per annum
Benefits: Three weeks of vacation and health insurance
Key Responsibilities
- Pitch, report, and write on education and non-education-related matters.
- Cultivate sources and stay informed on key developments related to education.
- Perform other related duties and projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- 2 years of experience in journalism.
- Strong reporting and writing skills.
- Residence in Jersey City is strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of education policy is a plus.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and multitask effectively, mixing breaking news stories with longer enterprise reporting.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
- Familiarity with AP style is preferred.
- Experience with WordPress and/or Mailchimp is a plus.
- Ability to work collaboratively with editors, co-reporters, and other colleagues.
Education
- Bachelor's degree required
Work Environment
This is a full-time role based out of our Jersey City office. We expect reporters to work from the office at least three days a week.
