Secondary Dean of Students

JOB STATEMENT:
The Secondary Dean of Students provides leadership, oversight, and administration for student conduct, behavior management, and alternative learning experiences. This role fosters a positive and inclusive school environment, promotes student success, and ensures compliance with district and state regulations. The individual collaborates with stakeholders to implement policies and programs that encourage academic achievement, social-emotional development, and a safe learning environment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
● Minimum Bachelor’s Degree
● Valid Washington State Administrator certification.
● Valid Washington State K-12 Teaching Certificate preferred
● Minimum of five years successful classroom teaching experience, preferred
● Demonstrated ability in leadership and development
Certificates/Licenses/Special Requirements:
● Criminal History Clearance/Fingerprints (waived if currently in the OSPI database showing clearance within the last two years)
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
● Successful leadership experience working with culturally diverse and ethnically diverse populations
● Empathy for students of varying abilities.
● Strong interpersonal skills
● Ability to take directions and be self-directed
● Ability to provide leadership and supervise personnel in accordance with district policy, and state and federal mandates
● Knowledge of education policies, curriculum development, and instructional best practices

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Student Conduct and Behavior Management:
● Leads the development, implementation, and evaluation of school-wide discipline and attendance procedures, ensuring equitable application
● Cultivates a positive school culture through restorative practices, conflict resolution, and student engagement initiatives
● Counsels students and parents on school and district policies related to discipline and attendance
● Collaborates with law enforcement as necessary
● Supervises students during non-instructional times
● Serves as a resource for staff on classroom management strategies
● Assists staff and parents in developing student behavioral expectations and support plans
● Administers appropriate consequences for behavior and attendance issues, including detention and in-school suspension, and collaborates on out-of-school suspension or expulsion decisions
● Assist in developing and implementing drug and alcohol intervention and prevention strategies
● Collects, analyzes, and reports data on school discipline and attendance to the building staff
● Oversees campus security related to student conduct
● Makes final determinations on excused/unexcused absences and manages 20-day drop procedures.
● Manages the in-school suspension program
Alternative Learning Experience (ALE) Program Management:
● Provides leadership and manages all facets of the ALE program and ensures adherence to state and district guidelines
● Supports ALE teachers in delivering personalized, competency-based learning
● Contributes to the development of district ALE policies
● Provides professional development for ALE staff
● Assists with communicating ALE requirements and student progress to parents/guardians
● Establishes partnerships to expand ALE opportunities
● Analyzes data to evaluate program effectiveness and inform decisions
Oversight of the Open Doors Program:
● Manages and provides oversight for all facets of the Open Doors program, and ensures compliance with state and district guidelines
● Supervises and evaluates Open Doors program staff
● Monitors the program's effectiveness in re-engaging students and promoting their academic success
● Ensures that the program provides appropriate support services to meet the unique needs of participating students
● Collaborates with community partners to enhance the program's services and resources
Leadership and School Improvement:
● Provides leadership in developing and implementing a strategic vision for academic excellence.
● Fosters continuous improvement through data-driven decision-making, instructional best practices, and professional development
● Leads and supports faculty in effective teaching strategies for diverse learners.
● Monitors and evaluates instructional programs for alignment with curriculum standards and student achievement goals.
● Contributes to the management of school operations (budgeting, scheduling, facilities, safety).
● Supervises and evaluates staff performance, providing feedback and professional growth opportunities.
● Implement strategies for student success, including academic interventions and social-emotional learning (SEL) programs.
● Collaborates with counselors, support staff, and community resources to address student and family needs.
● Promotes inclusivity and equity, advocating for all students.
● Serves as a liaison between the school, parents, and the community, fostering partnerships and communication.
● Organizes and participates in school events to engage families and community members.
● Collaborate with local organizations, businesses, and government agencies to enhance educational opportunities.
● Works with teachers and curriculum coordinators to implement district-approved curricula.
● Supports the development of instructional strategies aligned with state standards.
● Monitors and assesses teaching methods and curriculum delivery.
● Supports the implementation of mastery-based and cross-curricular learning.
● Utilizes student performance data to assess academic progress and inform decisions.
● Prepare reports on school performance (attendance, discipline, academic achievement).
● Assists in monitoring and supervising school facilities.
● Provides support and supervision at extracurricular and athletic events.
● Evaluates assigned staff.
● Provides leadership in developing, implementing and monitoring a strategic vision that includes interventions aimed at improving school performance as measured by the Washington School Improvement Framework to include performance on state assessments, graduation rates and attendance.
● Performs other duties as assigned
Communication and Collaboration:
● Communicate effectively with district administration, staff, parents, and community members.
● Develop and maintain strong relationships with all district departments and community partners
● Maintain a collaborative team culture within Yelm Community Schools
General Responsibilities:
● Effectively organize and manage time commitments to meet the diverse demands of the position.
● Comply with all District rules and regulations.
● Actively participate in proactive team efforts to achieve District, building, and departmental goals
● Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

EVALUATION:
● Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Administrative Staff
REPORTS TO: High School Principal or designee
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Working conditions may include but are not limited to: high paced environment with constant interruptions; requires a great deal of energy, flexibility, and patience to meet many and varied situations; must feel comfortable dealing with a diverse range of behaviors which may include upset or distraught staff and community members; work may require travel throughout the district in inclement weather; includes exposure to fumes emitted from various diesel and gas fueled equipment, working with chemicals associated with repair tasks and exposure to various weather conditions not limited to freezing weather, snow, rain, wind, and heat.
Physical abilities include moving/lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling/ stooping/kneeling/crouching/reaching/handling/fingering, with near and far visual acuity.
