Giant Eagle, Inc.

Produce Clerk

July 2014 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

Many co-workers are friendly and open to conversation that helps put the mind at ease after dealing with a lot of work related stress. The work itself may be physically strenuous but often is not difficult to understand. For a person getting their first job or getting a job with minimal work experience, Giant Eagle is a good place to start building your resume. The schedules are decently flexible, being open to accommodations as long as they are made a decent amount of time in advanced, and the pay is weekly.

What I wish was different

Often I feel my department is understaffed. There have been several occasions where my co-worker would be taken from his current position in Produce and moved to work as a Cashier in the middle of his shift, putting our department behind and leaving our boss stressed and irritable. The work expected in comparison to the amount of people working is often overwhelming. I normally work alone which I've grown accustomed to, but one man can only do so much by themselves. Working at Giant Eagle you have to be able to work and not let yourself be overcome by the stress of all that needs to be done.

Advice

It is best that whatever department you work in, you make an effort to get along with your co-workers. A customer can ruin your day but you may never see them again, but a co-worker can ruin your day and you have to see them again the very next day. If problems occur with a co-worker try to dispute them in a professional manner. If complications continue, consider asking upper management for a sit-down between the both of you, or if possible request a switch to another department within the store. Teamwork is very important to make the day go smoothly, the work itself is already tiring enough, don't let drama with other co-workers add to the burden.

Front End Cashier

December 2018 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I like how predictable the job is, it's very repetitive and I never have to do anything outside of my job description. I also really liked how flexible my supervisors were with scheduling, and how well they adhered to our agreed schedule. The pay is good too, it starts at $10/hour and goes up by 25 cents. As a college student, they let your seniority grow even while you're away at school, which is also cool.

What I wish was different

I wish that my particular location was better staffed, because I was often the only cashier working the front end at 9pm.

Advice

Be clear and direct about your schedule, and do call-offs in advance if you can.

Pharmacy Technician

April 2019 • Medina, OH

What I liked

Co-workers, setting, and actual material within the job. I enjoyed working with patients and helping them improve their daily lives through advising them with medications to help make their lives healthier.

What I wish was different

I wish I could work more hours. Giant Eagle is a union and within a union there is a strict hierarchy rule. The employees that have been there the longest get the most hours, assuming they want them. With me being the newest employee, I received the hours that were remaining. I'm sure I will appreciate this hierarchy rule once I am not the newest employee anymore. However for now, I wish we all had fair hours.

Advice

DO IT. This job, assuming you have supportive co-workers, can be a great learning experience. There are so many patients that you get to talk to and help and you truly feel like you are making a difference in their lives. Most patients appreciate the work that is done within the pharmacy and praise you for the work that is done. Some patients even bring in little gifts for the technicians and pharmacists to repay them for the work that we do.

Cashier

February 2018 • Youngstown, OH

What I liked

I like the work environment. It was mostly busy and the people working there were friendly. Most of the people that come through the line were patient and even helpful.

What I wish was different

I wish they had taken a longer time to train us and tell us more about the store. I have made mistakes because they did not take the time to teach us everything or most of what we need to know so mistakes like overcharging doesn’t happen.

Advice

Take this job slowly. It is rushed but make sure you ask questions and take the time to learn. This job can be stressful the first month, but after that it does get easy and better.

Deli Clerk

June - August 2018 • North Olmsted, OH

What I liked

Team members were dedicated to their work and always helpful.

What I wish was different

My first summer and winter at the deli, I wasn't trained to serve customers. As a result, during a typical shift I was asked to do everything else, even if I was busy. During busy periods such as the winter holidays, I worked nearly full time, at 7 or 8 hours day, with only two breaks of 15 minutes each, which was much too short to have a proper meal.

Advice

If your store is a very busy one, steer clear of the deli. The deli is one of the only departments that gets absolutely swamped around every holiday.
