I loved the city of Austin texas, the culture and the people at Dell were amazing. They really take care of the P&O interns with volunteer events, food tours, and lots of community building events

What I wish was different

Advice

I would recommend any intern going in to dell go in with the perspective that your project will be ambiguous however ask questions, have intellectual curiosity and have fun and you will be fine.

What I liked

I liked that my skills were valued by the organization. I also really appreciated the open culture. No matter what level, people were always willing to meet with you and have a 1x1 meeting. Everyone was genuinely interested in helping me figure out what I wanted to do in the future, whether that was with Dell or another company.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship hadn't been as independent actually. The whole internship was structured around working on a project. However, it was often difficult to get help from the team as they also all had their own projects to work on. It would have been nice to help with their projects and learn from them in a work setting rather than just trying to get their help with the intern project.

Advice

My advice to anyone interning at Dell would be just talking to as many people as possible. It can be scary, but reach out and put yourself out there. Dell is a HUGE organization and you should talk to as many people and learn as much as you can about all the teams at Dell. You never know when you might discover your true passion.

I wish I had been given a choice of which team to work on.

Go all-in with your internships. Take all of the intern social activities and try hard to get the most out of the experience.

I loved Dell's culture! They really made interns feel important by planning several events and givibg us meaningful work!

What I wish was different

I wish there was more activities just as the Finance interns, but they did plenty of all intern events

Be looking/asking for more work when you have capacity. My favorite part of my project came directly from asking for more!

Global Offer and Product Operations Intern

What I liked

I really enjoyed the great work/life balance that Dell emphasizes in their daily working life. Everyone was super friendly and willing to help with whatever questions we had. I scheduled 1X1s with 100s of employees, many of these VPs and SVPs, and they were all eager to explain to me more about their role within the company and why they love working at Dell. We also spent the summer working on one project that was assigned to us by our manager. This was great because it gave me the ability to learn how to effectively manage my own project while also planning the direction that I wanted it to go in. The intern projects that were assigned were very important business problems that were occurring within the current business process, so I felt like I had meaning throughout the summer with the work I was doing.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more TCU people in Austin! It is such a great place to work and has so many great opportunities. There are lots of top companies (ex. Google/Apple/Oracle) moving to Austin and I think we should get some more TCU students down there!

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions and meet with everyone you possibly can. Use this experience to learn about what you like in a company and in a job role. Dell has so many opportunities to explore other roles, so use that experience to begin to plan your career path and goals.

Software Developer Intern

What I liked

I got to work with Senior development on the full-stack development of a Microservice Application. They worked with the latest software and DevOps methodologies and tools. I learned so much about so many different languages and frameworks that I am no able to pick up and work with several programming languages and frameworks. They gave me key resources and expertise to speed up my learning process.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time to choose a specific area of focus such as front-end development and really get to know my stuff to a point where I don't have to consistently look things up. I am happy that I got to do a bit of everything because I know what to looks for when I run into difficulties.

Advice

Hit the ground running. I was lucky enough to be put in a work environment where senior developers were willing to answer my beginner questions and give me the resources to continue on studying by myself. Use you time off work to get a better understanding of what you just did, putting in the extra work makes a huge difference. Don't hesitate to ask questions, the more you ask the quicker you learn and the faster you grow.

I liked how big the intern program was at Dell. They held a lot of different intern events and made it fun for us as interns to get to know each other and feel a part of Dell.

What I wish was different

I wish they wouldn't have over recruited for HR interns because it made it more of a competitition for return offers than about learning and growing.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about my experience is always be networking. I networked into my internship and I continued to network once I was there. Getting to hear everyones experiences was super beneficial.

At Dell they give you real projects that they have to complete and put you in charge of them. You really get a feel of what it would actually be like to work there. From day one you are working exclusively with full time employees and not other interns.

I wish you could have a little say of which team you get placed with.

The training I received was very generic and didn’t apply to my location so there was a lot of trail and error on my part. The beginning of the summer was very slow with little to nothing to do

What I liked

Amazing place to work for. Fun culture, with a focus on personal growth and career development. Throughout my internship I had the opportunity for many different resources and although some aspects with challenging, with a great support network I never felt in over my head. I highly recommend anyone work for this company, and it's one of the best internships I could've asked for.

What I wish was different

Wish interns got a parking pass (like employees do), but ORCA card and small food subsidy was sufficient.

Advice

Network with as many people as possible. Everyone there is happy to meet with an intern to do an informational interview (1-on-1 as Dell calls it) and you can really learn a lot, not just within your role but the world beyond as well.

The atmosphere was very welcoming. Austin is a really fun city to live in, especially as a college aged person. They provided really nice housing to the interns as well.
